Erawan Waterfall

I visited Erawan today, it's a National Park about 60km north of Kanchanaburi and the home of Erawan Falls, a seven-tiered waterfall. I got up early and packed up the motorbike - it took about an hour to get there, but I was definitely the first person there. On the way up I had every tier to myself and I spent about 45 minutes alone at the top before anyone else arrived, which was really nice. I got some good photos - have a look here.

Crazy Thai Vehicles: Part II

Here is a Kanchanaburi Traffic Police motorcycle (and random purple three-wheeler!). The Police have to buy their own equipment, so all police bikes are different, some don't even have police stickers or markings at all. This guy is obviously a fan of CHiPs...

We Have Liftoff!
Friday, June 27, 2008, 15:55 - , ,
Last week I managed to get the first Thai rocket off the ground over by the football stadium. It lasted a grand total of three flights as the parachute refused to deploy. The nose cone was completely destroyed from repeatedly smacking into the ground, but at least there were three very smooth launches and flights. The rocket's centre of gravity and pressure are good because it turns 180 degrees at apogee and heads straight for the ground! If the parachute container had not become jammed it would have been a perfect turn for deployment. On the final landing (or crash) the balsa fins all snapped off and were difficult to reattach with the glue residue making the surface uneven. I need a new, slightly more flexible fin material. I found some thick foam in Tesco Lotus that looks promising. It is certainly flexible and would absorb the shock of landing much better, but it may be too flexible to control the rocket at high speed. It needs a test flight, but another small catastrophe occured when my last nozzle was lost on a 500ml test rocket. I forgot about the compressor and it was at around 50 psi when I checked it. I tried to take the rocket off the launcher as 50 psi was mental for a garden test launch. Of course, as soon as I touched it, it launched - the jet stream hit me in the face so I lost sight of the rocket. I'm pretty sure it went over the house opposite! It'll be a few days before I get another one in the air.

I have no idea what Thai law actually says on the matter, but in practice it seems it is only the driver that is required to wear a helmet... The police would not stop this bike. You often see students three or four up on a scooter. The girls wearing their school uniforms sit sideways with both legs on one side. The most I have ever seen on a bike is six and I once saw a dad holding a baby in one arm and controlling his bike with the other.
(Apologies for the poor quality image - it was taken through the window of a speeding car.)
